I am teaching 20th century Africa and am using this year, Davidson,
*Modern Africa*; Vansina, *Living with Africa*; Appiah, *In My
Father's House*; Ayittey, *Africa Betrayed*; and Ahma Tuna, *The Case
of the Socialist Witch Doctor*. They seem to work well, although
Appiah requires close reading, and the students do complain about
his opacity.
