In teaching a course on Africa in the 20th century, I find myself always
agonizing over the selection of texts, particularly for the colonial era, but
also for the post-independence period as well. There is either such an
enormous wealth of unfamilar detail as to be overwhelming to students or
genralizations of such breadth and abstraction as to lack concrete meaning to
students. I'd be grateful for suggestions as to materials others have found
that combine cases and generalizations in meaningful ways.
