The John W. Draper Interdisciplinary Master’s Program in Humanities
and Social Thought invites applications for an Assistant Professor/Faculty
Fellow in the area of The City, pending budgetary and administrative
approval. The initial appointment will be for one year beginning September
1, 2003, renewable annually for a maximum of three years. We seek an
outstanding interdisciplinary scholar with training in urban issues,
including (but not limited to) urban anthropology and/or sociology,
cultural geography, social demography, urban policy, or related concerns.
Global political and/or historical perspectives are especially encouraged,
with particular attention given to questions of ethnicity, power, social
space, and the politics of difference. Responsibilities include but
are not limited to teaching three courses a year, advising students,
participating in faculty colloquia, and participating in admissions
decisions. Candidates must be committed to interdisciplinary scholarship
and excellence in teaching. Ph.D. must have been completed within three

ONLINE HISTORY PROJECT ASSOCIATE: Entry-level position for two innovative,
digital history projects at the Center for History & New Media (CHNM)
at George Mason University (GMU): The September 11 Digital Archive (http://911digitalarchive.org) and ECHO:
Exploring and Collecting History Online-Science & Technology (http://echo.gmu.edu). We are seeking an energetic,
well-organized person who takes initiative and can work in a team and
is comfortable with web-based projects and work. This is an exciting
grant-funded, one-year position that is particularly appropriate for
someone with combined interest in history and technology. BA or BS by
September 1, 2003, and demonstrated interested in both history and the
web. Experience developing web-database applications and pages (e.g.
in MySQL and PHP) and familiarity with associated open source operating
systems and software is preferred. GMU is located in Northern Virginia,
fifteen miles from downtown Washington, DC. CHNM (see website below)
is national leader in innovative work in digital history. Salary: $25K

Saint David’s School, a traditional boys’ pre-kindergarten through
8th grade independent school in New York City, is seeking an assistant
librarian/computer teacher for September 2003. Saint David’s is committed
to developing an integrated information center merging instructional
technology and library education and services. Supervised by the Director
of Information Services, this teacher/librarian will assist the Upper
School Librarian with all aspects of the library program (grades 4-8),
and will also teach selected computer classes, grades 3-8. The successful
candidate will participate in the planning and implementation of an
information skills continuum.
This position requires the following qualifications:
- Masters of Library Science degree (MLS or equivalent) from an ALA
accredited institution within the last three years with a specialty
in school media or instructional technology.
- Extensive background in middle school/young adult literature and
the ability to foster a love of reading in boys.
- A strong background in the use of word processing, spreadsheets,
databases and multimedia applications to meet instructional needs.
- Ability to work and communicate well with teachers, students and
staff.
Additionally, the following are desirable:
- Previous teaching experience at the 3-8 level.
- Familiarity with Follett Software and Macintosh Computers.

Jr. Specialist
The Books and Manuscripts department at Christie’s New York is looking
for a Jr. Specialist to work with American historical manuscripts, letters
and documents (dating primarily from 1775-1950) as well as some literary
material.
Responsibilities include:
- Researching the historical significance, authenticity, bibliography
and provenance of the documents, including consulting outside experts
- Writing catalogue descriptions and condition reports
- Interacting with clients, including correspondence via phone and
mail
- Coordinating catalogue mailings
- Answering phone and written inquiries and estimate requests
- Maintaining the department library and research materials
- Assisting with catalogue production and layout
- Coordinating photography and framing
- Oversee the warehousing of historical documents
Candidate must possess a BA in History or American Studies or equivalent,
MA strongly preferred, along with a minimum of 2 years related work
experience and excellent communication (writing and verbal), interpersonal
and organizational skills.
