The Department of History and Classics (plus Religious Studies) at the University of Alberta invites applications for a Lecturer (rank TBD) in the history of Canada and in Indigenous history, with a starting date of September 1, 2021. This is an eight-month full-time position, with a teaching load of three courses per semester.
Applicants must hold a PhD in Canadian History or a related discipline, or be ABD with a firm expectation of completing the PhD before August 1, 2021. Demonstrated potential for effective university teaching is a requirement for the position. Indigenous applicants are especially encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities for the position include:
• Teaching three undergraduate courses per semester. Subject to confirmation, the teaching assignment is likely to consist Canadian history survey courses (pre- and post-Confederation), courses on Indigenous history (pre- and post-1870), and one senior seminar course.
• Service responsibilities directly related to the teaching assignment (student advising, office hours) and participation in department meetings.
Edmonton and the University of Alberta are situated on Treaty 6 territory and are a traditional meeting ground and home for many Indigenous Peoples, including Cree, Saulteaux, Blackfoot, Dene, Métis, and Nakota Sioux. Established in 1908 as a board-governed, public institution, the University of Alberta has earned the reputation of being one of the best universities in Canada based on strengths in teaching, research, and service. The University’s main campus is located in Edmonton, Alberta’s capital city. The Edmonton metropolitan area is the sixth largest in Canada, with a population of approximately one million, and is home to Canada's second-largest urban Indigenous population, with over 76,000 residents who identify as First Nations, Inuit, or Métis. The University serves over 39,000 students in almost 400 undergraduate, graduate and professional programs. The Faculty of Arts is the oldest and most diverse faculty on campus and is one of the largest research and teaching centres in Western Canada. The Department of History and Classics has a long record of research and teaching excellence on the history of Indigenous peoples.
This position is a limited-term Academic Teaching Staff appointment (T8) governed by the collective agreement between the University of Alberta and the Association of Academic Staff at the University of Alberta. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications in accordance with this Agreement and the negotiated salary scales, and offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical and dental coverage and a professional expense allowance.
