Start date – 1st October 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter

Pembroke College wishes to appoint two Junior Research Fellows to the ‘Religion and Frontier Challenges’ research programme. Junior Research Fellowships are full-time fellowships offered to early career researchers of any nationality and will be appointed with effect from October 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter for three years.
‘Religion and the Frontier Challenges’ is an ambitious academic fellowship programme, sitting at the intersection of theology and other academic disciplines. It seeks to enrich discussion of how contemporary religious traditions and ideas might provide/are providing knowledge and leadership in facing the major challenges currently confronting humanity. The programme is informed by theological discourse surrounding major contemporary ‘frontier challenges’, and the need for religion to provide creative intellectual and practical responses to the contexts of crisis, fragility and uncertainty in the modern world. The programme will invite applications to pursue research projects that examine responses of contemporary religion to any of the following:
- The challenges of human knowledge, including contemporary ideologies and epistemologies (e.g. secularism, liberalism, atheism), or changes in forms of access to or dissemination of knowledge (e.g. new communications, media, or digital technologies).
- The challenges of the fight for justice, including struggles against all forms of inequality, discrimination and marginalisation in human societies, and the search for societal cohesion.
- The challenges of the modern sciences, including the new questions and opportunities raised by advances in technological, medical, biological, environmental and other sciences, and the challenges of sustainability.
We welcome proposals for original research projects, and particularly welcome those that are interdisciplinary; that propose collaborations with non-academic partners; and/or that focus upon the Global South.
Applicants should hold, or be close to completion of a doctorate before taking up the post. Applicants should have experience of research at doctoral level or above in theology and religious studies or in any other related discipline. The successful candidate will be expected to propose, plan and manage a high quality programme of original academic research which relates to the wider agenda of the research programme.
Prior to application please read the further particulars which are available at http://www.pmb.ox.ac.uk/about-pembroke/vacancies along with the terms and conditions.
