LAKE FOREST COLLEGE invites applications for a tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor (PhD) or Instructor (ABD) of African American Studies, beginning August 2021. We seek applicants with a PhD in African American Studies or a closely related discipline. We are most interested in candidates with a specialization in contemporary African American politics, political theory, and /or race and public policy. Essential courses for this position are fourfold: (1) AFAM 110: Introduction to African American Studies, (2) 200- and 300-level courses in African American Studies suitable for African American Studies majors and minors and general education curriculum support for our “Domestic Pluralism” requirement, (3) an as needed 400-level senior seminar in African American Studies, and (4) a desire to teach in our First-Year Studies program (FIYS). Course offerings in other areas are welcome, based on the candidate’s interests and expertise, as is willingness to contribute to other programs on campus, such as Legal Studies, Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, Social Justice, Environmental Studies, Cinema Studies, etc. The teaching load is three courses per semester (introductory to advanced undergraduate) with the usual non-teaching duties, including special course work such as tutorials, research projects, and senior theses.
Lake Forest College’s African American Studies major is organized thematically with courses in literature, history, and philosophy and supported by rich and very diverse elective offerings.
