Assistant Professor of Pre-1900 Japanese Literature and Culture
Description
The Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago invites applications for a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor in the field of Pre-1900 Japanese Literary and Cultural Studies, including such fields as literature, intellectual and cultural history, performance studies, religious studies, and related areas. The expected start date for the position is July 1, 2021, or as soon as possible thereafter. The teaching load for tenure-track positions is typically four courses per year; additional responsibilities include advising at all levels of the program as well as service on departmental and university committees.
Qualifications
Applicants should be prepared to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of specialization as well as general courses in Japanese culture, classical forms of language, and related fields, as well as in the University of Chicago Core Curriculum. Applicants should have excellent skills in reading primary source texts, as well as a track record of innovative scholarship. We encourage scholars with interdisciplinary and interregional research interests to apply.
In order to be appointed as Assistant Professor, the selected candidate must have completed all requirements for a PhD in a field related to the search by the start date of the appointment.
