Helmerich Center for American Research
Travel to Collections Grants of $500 per week are available for up to two weeks’ residence at the Helmerich Center for American Research (HCAR). Fellows are expected to be active researchers at HCAR, and they are encouraged to participate in the intellectual life of HCAR and The University of Tulsa. A brief report will be due within 30 days of completion of the travel grant, and a copy of any publications resulting from the research should also be sent to HCAR.
The Helmerich Center houses the Gilcrease Library and Archive containing more than 100,000 rare books, documents, maps and unpublished works. The vast collection, dating back to Spanish arrival in the Americas, tells the stories of the New England colonies, Westward expansion and the experiences of America’s native peoples. Fellows also are encouraged to research materials relevant to their project at McFarlin Library Special Collections (on The University of Tulsa campus), which has extensive holdings pertaining to the history and literature of the Americas.
To apply, please submit the following:
• Research proposal of up to 1,000 words, specifying the materials to be consulted at HCAR.
• Curriculum vitae, not to exceed three pages
• One letter of reference
