THE DEPARTMENT:
The Department offers both the B.A. and M.A. degrees in History, with directed career advising into fields that focus on students' passion for history. Our faculty are award-winning professional scholars, widely published in their fields and active in their professional associations. Students have the opportunity to choose from a wide array of history courses, and examine the roots of our contemporary world issues through understanding how we got here in the first place. The undergraduate major includes foundational courses in historical interpretation and research, thematic areas of concentration, electives, history labs, applied history courses and capstone courses in historiography and research methods. The graduate program consists of a series of graduate seminars and the graduate project. M.A. candidates have the opportunity to work on projects directly related to their career goals.
DUTIES OF THE POSITION:
The History Department at California State University East Bay seeks a specialist in the History of Migration in the Americas from 1492 to the independence movements in the Americas. A successful candidate will be able to teach upper division courses in the histories of enslaved people in this area up through the early 19th century.
Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay include courses at the Hayward, Concord, and Online campuses. In addition to teaching, all faculty have advising responsibilities, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and are expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities.
RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Subject to budgetary authorization.
DATE OF APPOINTMENT: Fall Semester, 2020
Qualifications
We seek candidates who emphasize race, rebellion, and the complex notions of work, freedom and citizenship in the Americas (North America, South America, and the Caribbean). An interest in environmental history and sustainability is a plus. A tenure-track hire would also teach the early US History survey courses and support the Department’s core offerings in historical writing and historiography, as well as graduate courses. A Ph.D. in history or related field is required.
Candidates should demonstrate experience in teaching, mentoring, research, or community service that has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate a record of scholarly activity.
