Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. in History (research field is open), demonstrated experience in teaching history/social studies at the secondary level and/or developing curriculum work in the discipline, and an active research agenda in their field of study. Candidates who are ABD will be considered, but the position requires completion of all doctoral requirements by August 2019.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Support the department’s program for history majors seeking licensure to teach social studies at the secondary level. Collaborate with the director and other department colleagues in development and delivery of history/social studies education courses for majors in the program. Teach other courses, particularly in general education and in the candidate's area of research specialization. Conduct field supervision of student teachers as their academic area consultant. Serve on committee assignments pertinent to the university’s teacher preparation program. Pursue a research and publication agenda in history, which can include work in social studies education.

Appalachian State University’s History Department houses the largest program for the education of secondary history/social studies teachers in North Carolina. Our program’s mission is to prepare our majors to teach a robust, digitally-infused, and globally-minded history/social studies curriculum. The department offers three other undergraduate majors, a master’s degree program, and employs approximately 25 tenure-line faculty members.
