Hiring Department Summary
The Asian Studies Program is one of 14 departments/programs in the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies (SSIS). We have 26 affiliated faculty members who serve more than 60 undergraduate majors and minors. Our undergraduate program is designed to give all students a well-rounded education in Asian Studies, as well as to provide a strong preparation in one of four concentrations: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and South/Southeast Asia. Students who successfully complete our program receive a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Essential Duties
• Teach undergraduate courses in Korean Studies. Additional teaching responsibilities may include capstone and fieldwork courses.
• Develop a focused and productive program of research in area of specialization.
• Develop courses in Asian Studies and area of specialization.
• Provide advising to Asian Studies majors and minors.
• Provide service to the program, college, university, and community.
• Work as a cooperative member in the program including curriculum development, assessment, and program review.
• Expected to serve as Director of the Asian Studies Program in the upcoming years (see Appointment Specifics below).
Appointment Specifics
The intent is for the successful candidate to take on assistant directorship responsibilities within the first few years of appointment, in preparation to assume the Director of the Asian Studies Program role around their fourth or fifth year.
Required Qualifications
• Ph.D. in relevant field from an accredited university with primary research focus on Korean modern culture, history and/or society. ABD applicants will be considered. If ABD, all requirements for the doctoral degree must be completed by August 2019.
• Potential or proven track-record as a researcher.
• Area of specialization in Korean Studies.
• Demonstrated ability or potential to teach college-level courses.
Preferred Qualifications
• Area of research in Korean Studies.
• Ability to teach courses in Chinese Studies.
• College-level teaching, research, and service experience.
• Ability to develop coursework in Asian Studies and Korean Studies.
• Ability and desire to teach undergraduate courses, core courses in the candidate’s area of specialization, and capstone courses.
• Ability to work with diverse and underrepresented populations.
• Ability to develop community partnerships with campus communities as well as local and international communities.
• Ability to develop and expand curriculum and program.
• Interest and ability in using a wide variety of teaching techniques and information technology in the teaching and learning process.
• Interest in supervising the Asian Studies Program.
• Administrative experience (e.g., chair of committees, undergraduate/graduate coordinator).
