The University of Oxford is seeking an outstanding candidate to fill the Shaw Professorship of Chinese. The Shaw professorship is one of the most prestigious international academic positions concerned with the study of pre-modern China, and you would be joining a vibrant intellectual community at a time when Oxford’s profile in the study of China in all its aspects is growing.
For this exciting and challenging role, the Faculty of Oriental Studies seeks applications from colleagues working in the cultural disciplines, such as language, literature and society, of pre-modern China. As Professor you will provide academic leadership in Chinese Studies. You will undertake and publish research of the highest quality, encouraging others to do the same, and apply for research funding. You will teach at all levels from Undergraduates to post-doctoral researchers, through lectures, classes, small groups, and advice and supervision; you will also take part in examining. You may be asked to become Director of the China Centre, or hold office as Chair of the Faculty Board or other senior role.
A scholar of the highest international calibre, you will have an international reputation in research and publication in pre-modern Chinese studies, complemented by a high quality ongoing research agenda. You will have a solid linguistic knowledge of Classical and Modern Chinese, with the ability and enthusiasm to teach students at all levels. You will need to be able to contribute to the development of the subject in Oxford and beyond, and inspire colleagues and students. Your experience of, or potential in, academic governance and administration will, ideally, be coupled with a record of obtaining external funding for research projects.
The Professorship is located within an exceptionally strong and supportive research environment. You will be a Fellow of University College, and will be part of a lively and intellectually stimulating academic community which performs to the highest international levels in research and publications. You will have access to the excellent research facilities which Oxford offers.
