Director of the D'Arcy McNickle Center for American Indian and Indigenous Studies
Institution Type: | Nonprofit |
Location: | Illinois, United States |
Position: | Administrator, Director, Museum Education, Other Professional |
The Newberry Library, an independent research library in Chicago, seeks a scholar-administrator to serve as Director of the D’Arcy McNickle Center for American Indian and Indigenous Studies. The director leads all aspects of a center designed to promote research, scholarship, programming, education, and teaching in American Indian and Indigenous Studies. The position includes leadership of the Newberry Consortium in American Indian Studies (NCAIS) and the Center’s other programmatic activities, which include outreach to American Indian communities in Chicago and beyond. A PhD in American Indian and Indigenous studies, or a related field, is required, and a record of scholarship, administrative experience, and teaching is preferred. Applicants at all career stages will be considered.
The McNickle Center was established in conjunction with the Newberry’s deep and voluminous collections related to the Native peoples of the Americas. Across four and a half decades, the Center has played a significant role in promoting and shaping modern scholarship in American Indian and Indigenous studies. Its symposia, seminars, and fellowships have brought together scholars and graduate students from across North America and around the world for training in indigenous-studies methodologies and for research in the Newberry’s exceptional collection. Strengths of the collection relating to indigenous peoples include history, ethnography, linguistics, art, and archaeology, among other areas, across the North and South American continents. We seek a leader with the capacity to nurture scholarship, develop and manage creative programming, connect with American Indian communities, and sustain the McNickle Center as a central hub for innovative indigenous studies research.
The Newberry Library is committed to diversity and inclusion. We recognize that our building and Chicago are located on Indigenous homelands, including those of the Potawatomi, Ojibwe, Odawa, Miami, and Kickapoo, among many others. We respect and honor their historic and continued presence in Chicago. As an equal opportunity employer, the Library does not discriminate in hiring or employment on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, marital status, sexual orientation, age, disability, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state, or local law.
