Assistant Professor - Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies
University of Massachusetts Boston
The Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and the MS Program in Transnational Cultural and Community Studies invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position beginning September 1, 2019. We are especially interested in a candidate keen to contribute to program development of the relatively new graduate program of TCCS and undergraduate minor of Sexuality Studies. This would be a joint appointment, with the tenure home in the Department of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies; teaching and service responsibilities would be equally shared across both units and supported through a Memorandum of Understanding. We are seeking candidates who specialize in queer/sexuality studies and critical ethnic studies. We particularly welcome candidates with research areas that include—but are not limited to—sexuality studies and critical race theory, settler colonialism and indigenous studies, imperialisms, and postcolonial studies.
The standard teaching load is four courses a year, including both undergraduate and graduate courses.Courses might include core courses for WGS or TCCS, courses central to the WGS Sexualities Studies minor, and courses in the candidate’s area of focus as well as WGS undergraduate and TCCS graduate courses in queer theory, queer of color critique and/or transnational/diasporic queer studies, community-engaged research methods. Responsibilities also include advising and mentoring students in both TCCS and WGS.
Successful candidates will have a Ph.D. (in hand or by August 2019), in a relevant discipline in the humanities, social sciences, or related inter or transdisciplinary fields. Examples of preferred backgrounds include a Ph.D. and/or a graduate certificate/concentration, in feminist, gender, sexuality, or women’s studies with focus on issues of race, racism, or immigration, or a PhD in critical ethnic studies with a focus on gender and sexuality.
