The Department of History at the City College of New York is seeking a tenure-track assistant professor in nineteenth-century American history. The subfield is open, but the successful candidate will be expected to teach a regular sequence in the Civil War and Reconstruction. In addition to regular teaching duties, the successful applicant will pursue an active scholarly agenda, recruit and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, and participate in departmental and divisional service.
One of the most vibrant programs on campus, History has been crafted to meet the needs of the most avid general student of the human past, as well as those interested in a particular era or region. The department's accomplished faculty is devoted to this task and prepares students for a wide range of future careers and challenges. Graduates not only represent City College at major higher educational institutions around the country but have gone on to successful careers in a wide range of legal, medical entertainment, educational, and other humanistic fields. The History Department is housed in the Division of Humanities and the Arts, which supports the creation and dissemination of humanistic knowledge and prepares students for lifelong learning, critical thinking, and creative activity. The CCNY community engages substantively with Harlem, New York City, and the larger intellectual world. We are deeply committed to the legacy of City College as an exemplar of public education, dynamic academic excellence, social mobility through educational attainment, and service.
QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. degree in History or related field. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
