DEPARTMENT OF CHINESE AND BILINGUAL STUDIES
The Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies is one of the constituent departments of the Faculty of Humanities. One of the core missions of the Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies is to promote and develop studies of Chinese in multilingual contexts and studies of multilingualism in Chinese contexts. It has built a reputation in Applied Chinese Language Studies, and seeks to extend its strength in areas like Bilingualism (including Translation and Interpreting), Intercultural Communication and East Asian Studies. Another mission of the Department is to offer profession-oriented programmes that meet the career aspirations of young adults in Hong Kong and elsewhere in Greater China. It offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programmes in Chinese Linguistics, Chinese Language Teaching, Speech Therapy, Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Translating & Interpreting, and Bilingual Corporate Communication. It also offers courses in Korean/Japanese language and culture at bachelor’s level. Within the Department, there is a Centre for Translation Studies, a PolyU-PekingU Research Centre on Chinese Linguistics, a Speech Therapy Unit, and a Chinese Language Centre which provides training in Chinese language and Putonghua for the whole University. Senior Teaching Fellow in Chinese Language Education (with concurrent appointment as Director of Chinese Language Centre of the Department) (Ref. 18032924)
Reporting to the Head of Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies, the appointee will be offered a concurrent appointment as Director of the Chinese Language Centre. The appointee will be required to (a) oversee and manage all businesses of the Centre including the delivery of subjects that it offers; (b) represent the Centre to liaise with the Centre’s stakeholders for the planning and delivery of Chinese language subjects; (c) take a leading role in the Centre’s curriculum-design and pedagogies functions, especially the development of new subjects in the area of Discipline-specific Chinese; (d) engage in a full range of activities related to teaching and learning, including preparing and developing materials, designing teaching and assessment strategies, delivering teaching in settings appropriate for the objective of learning, interacting with and motivating students, and assessing the performance of and giving feedback to students; (e) ensure the quality of subject curricula and the overall teaching and learning approach as well as the effective operation of the subject(s) to which he/she is assigned to manage; and (f) undertake administrative duties in academic and departmental affairs.
Applicants should have (a) a PhD degree in a relevant discipline, preferably with the specialism in Chinese Language Education, and/or Teaching Chinese as a Second/Foreign Language, plus not less than six years of post-qualification tertiary teaching experience; or a master’s degree in a relevant discipline plus not less than nine years of post-qualification tertiary teaching experience; (b) evidence of outstanding teaching performance and good potential for making substantial contributions in curriculum design and development as well as programme management; (c) a high level of fluency in both Chinese and English; and (d) a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarly activities and professional service.
Remuneration and Conditions of Service
A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered. Initial appointment will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement. Applicants should state their current and expected salary in the application.
