Full time, fixed term for four years covering secondment
Based in the Oriental Institute, Pusey Lane, Oxford
We are seeking an enthusiastic and suitably qualified academic lecturer to cover teaching in Tibetan language and literature, and Tibetan and Himalayan history and civilization, while a senior member of staff is serving as Chair of the Faculty Board. These teaching responsibilities will require approximately 10 hours per week contact time with students during term.
The lecturer will prepare and deliver lectures and teaching in small groups for undergraduates and graduate students. This will include classes in Tibetan from elementary level upward, classical Tibetan and Buddhist texts, and lectures on various aspects of Tibetan history and civilization. He/she will set and mark examinations, supervise dissertations, and assist with admissions at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels. The lecturer will coordinate courses in Tibetan and Himalayan Studies, liaising with colleagues over teaching arrangements, and will develop the courses in the light of feedback. The lecturer will also serve on relevant committees in the Faculty.
She/he will also conduct advanced independent scholarly research in these fields and otherwise contribute to current research, including by publication and presentation.
With a doctorate, by the time the post commences, in Tibetan Studies or a closely related subject, the successful candidate will be able to show both aptitude for and experience of teaching at undergraduate and/or graduate level. She/he will demonstrate a solid knowledge of the Tibetan language, with the ability to teach both literary and spoken forms; in addition she/he will be able to teach aspects of the history and civilization of Tibet, and supervise graduate students on topics in this area. She/he will show a commitment to communicating and publishing research in this field research. The candidate’s excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills will be coupled with a willingness to take on appropriate administrative tasks.
This is a full time post for a fixed period of four years.
