Assistant Professor of Native American History

The Department of History at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) is seeking applicants for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Native American History to begin August 2018. The University seeks candidates who are committed to fostering excellence in teaching, scholarship and service.
Responsibilities
The ideal candidate will teach a range of specialized courses in United States History, including the Department of History’s methodological sequence in research and writing. The candidate will also teach lower division survey courses in United States History required in the General Education curriculum. Additional responsibilities include student advising and mentoring, curriculum and program development, participation in departmental, college, and university governance structures, and active involvement in research and scholarly activities in Native American and indigenous history.
CSUDH is determined to “support, enhance, and develop academic programs that culminate in globally relevant degrees by becoming an innovative, high- touch, high quality, comprehensive urban university” (University Strategic Plan). The ideal candidate will be committed to helping the CSUDH History Department contribute to the realization of this goal. She/he will demonstrate a record of teaching excellence, a strong ongoing research program, and a commitment to the student population served by the University.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. in the discipline of Native American or United States History. Degree must be in hand at time of appointment.
- Demonstrated ability to teach survey courses in United States history, specialized courses in history of Native American\indigenous peoples, history of the American West, United States Immigration, as well as courses in historical research and writing.
- Demonstrated record of effective teaching and student mentoring in culturally diverse academic environments.
- A promising research agenda.
Preferred Qualifications
- Evidence of at least two years effective teaching in preferred subjects as instructor of record.
- Experience with high impact practices and pedagogies that promote student success, retention, and graduation.

CSU Dominguez Hills was established in 1960 and is one of the 23 campuses that comprise the California State University system. CSU Dominguez Hills is a comprehensive public university located in the South Bay region of the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area. With approximately 300 full-time faculty, the University serves a culturally rich, diverse student body of approximately 15,000 students in an urban setting.
