Departmental Lecturer in Modern Iranian History
fixed term for 32 months from January 2018
Grade 7: £31,604 - £38,833 p.a. full time
based at the Oriental Institute, Pusey Lane, Oxford
We are seeking an enthusiastic and suitably qualified academic to teach and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students, to carry out research in Modern Iranian History, and contribute to course administration. This is a fixed term position, to begin in January 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter, to cover the temporary secondment of a senior member of staff.
You will lecture, tutor and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students, and supervise their dissertations. As well as producing course materials for students and applicants, you will help to co-ordinate the BA course in Persian and associated joint degrees, including assessment, examining and administration of examinations and of the students' year abroad in Iran. You will also participate in the undergraduate and postgraduate student admissions processes. You will engage in advanced research in modern Iranian history, publishing your findings in international journals and academic presses.
The successful applicant will, by the start of the appointment, hold a doctorate within the field of modern Iranian history. He/she will show ability to teach and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students in this field, including an ability to lecture to undergraduate and postgraduate students at an appropriate level in an interesting and engaging manner. An excellent command of New Persian is essential, such that she/he can carry out research using primary sources in this language, can teach students to read and analyse Persian historical texts, and can train students to use such texts for their research. With a commitment to research of the highest calibre in the field, and to publishing this research at the level expected by international journals and major presses, the successful applicant will show excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills. He/she will also be able and willing to undertake course administration, to participate in Faculty affairs, and to undertake pastoral responsibilities.
