Aarhus University, School of Culture and Society
Postdoctoral Fellowship in Cognitive Neuroscience (931071)
Institution Type: | College / University |
Location: | Denmark |
Position: | Post-Doctoral Fellow |
The School of Culture and Society at Aarhus University invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in cognitive neuroscience. This is a full-time position which is available from 1 February 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. It is associated with the research project “What Social Robots Can and Should Do—Towards Integrative Social Robotics”, supported by the Carlsberg Foundation (Semper Ardens Grant).
Place of employment: Jens Chr. Schous Vej 3-7, 8000 Aarhus C, Denmark.
Research context
The research project “What Social Robots Can and Should Do—Towards Integrative Social Robotics” will define and implement a new paradigm for developing social robotics applications. “Integrative Social Robotics” (ISR) tightly integrates robotics research with a wide scope of research disciplines that investigate human social interactions, including empirical, conceptual and value-theoretical research in the humanities. To investigate the performance of the new method, the team will design and test several innovative social robotics applications that promote socio-cultural values and norms of personal well-being, such as fairness, authenticity, autonomy and creative self-realisation.
The successful applicant will be a member of a project team of 25 international researchers from 11 disciplines (philosophy, robotics, anthropology, psychology, linguistics, education, communication, management, cognitive science, computer science and sociology). The project is coordinated by Professor MSO Johanna Seibt at the Department of Philosophy and History of Ideas, and will run from 2016 until 2021. Research profile
The research tasks of this position will centre on discovering how the physical design (appearance, movements, functionalities) of social robots can be used to modulate neural mechanisms related to social cognition. In particular, the postdoc will focus on how social robots engage mechanisms for the ascription of agency and humanity to others; for inferring intentions from actions; for social learning and social biases concerning others; and for aligning one’s behaviour with others (i.e. for co-operating and conforming with others).
The research tasks in this complex, interdisciplinary project are partly pre-defined, but it is expected that all the project members will contribute original research ideas. The successful applicant should be capable of critically applying neuroscientific approaches to the above-mentioned research topics, as well as having knowledge of principles of experimental design and statistical methods applied in cognitive neuroscience.
For further information about the position, please contact Associate Professor Joshua Skewes, email: filjcs@cas.au.dk
Qualifications
Applicants for this position should hold a PhD degree or equivalent qualifications in a relevant discipline. The successful applicant will be expected to conduct research using one or more neuroimaging modalities (i.e. EEG/MEG, fMRI, PET, etc).
Applicants should submit:
• a concise description of their research profile (max. two pages)
• a research proposal relevant to the topic of interest (max. three pages).
The proposal must be uploaded together with the letter of application.
For further instructions about submitted material, please consult the formal requirements below.
The application must be submitted in English.
