The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Alabama announces a call for applications for the newly established Richard Leon Chambers Endowed Professorship in Middle Eastern Culture and Islamic Religious Studies. The position will begin August 2018. The successful applicant may work in any post-7th century timeframe and focus geographically on one or more settings in the Middle East, including sites of the Ottoman Empire and Turkish civilization. We seek to bring to campus a scholar of Middle Eastern history and culture who can prepare students to better understand current international affairs and who is also able to exercise leadership in future academic programs and research collaborations.
Applicants should demonstrate exemplary methodological, language, and /or ethnographic skills and should be gifted faculty members whose accomplishments, in both teaching and research, indicate great potential; the successful candidate, who will be appointed at the tenured rank of either Associate Professor or Professor, will join a Department of relevance to their expertise and may also hold a cross-appointment within the College. We welcome applications from mid-career and senior scholars working in such fields as Anthropology, History, Middle Eastern Studies, Political Science, Religious Studies, or other disciplines represented in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Review of applications will begin on October 15. Applicants are required to apply online, submitting a cover letter, C.V., and writing sample; as part of the application please have three letters of reference sent directly, by mail, to the chair of the search committee; a group of semi-finalists will meet with the committee via a brief online session prior to the College identifying finalists to be brought to campus for interviews.
