The Department of Writing Studies in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track faculty position beginning fall semester 2018 (August 27, 2018). Appointment will be made at the rank of assistant professor. Our primary interest is in a beginning assistant professor but we would also consider an advanced assistant professor. We seek an outstanding candidate in rhetoric of science or rhetoric of health and medicine.
A Ph.D. or foreign equivalent in Writing Studies, Rhetoric, Composition, Technical Communication, Communication or related field is required. Degree must be in hand by August 27, 2018. To be considered, candidates most demonstrate clear potential for academic achievement in scholarly research, have experience teaching composition and/or technical communication, and be willing to participate in service. Promise and/or record of publication in rhetoric of science and/or health/medicine is preferred, as is teaching experience in technical communication, rhetoric of science, and/or rhetoric of health and medicine.
Candidates will be evaluated according to the overall quality of their academic preparation and scholarly research/profile, evidence of research ability, evidence of commitment to teaching and skills as a teacher, and strength of recommendations.
One of thirty departments in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota, the Department of Writing Studies is the home of technical communication, first-year writing, and the writing center. The department offers a B.S. in Technical Writing and Communication, and M.S. in Scientific and Technical Communication, a post baccalaureate certificate in Technical Communication, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Scientific and Technical Communication. Current research specialties in the department include rhetorical theory, rhetoric and composition, rhetoric of technology, internet studies, and gender studies.

The Writing Studies Department offers exciting opportunities for faculty and students to do interdisciplinary work with colleagues in English, Communication Studies, the Medical School, Journalism, Law, Public Health, History of Science, Computer Science, and other fields. Faculty in the department also teach within the honors and freshman seminar programs. The Writing Studies Department maintains a long-standing reputation for excellence in technical communication.
