Chinese Literature and Translation (12-Month Lecturer)
The Department of Asian Studies at The University of British Columbia - Vancouver is accepting applications for a 12-month lecturer position in Chinese Literature and Translation Studies, commencing September 1, 2017. This position will be for an initial one-year appointment, with possibility of renewal, subject to excellent teaching performance, approval of the Department, and availability of funds. We seek candidates with expertise in both modern and pre-modern Chinese literature, as well as expertise on and experience (in the form of publications) in both the practice and the teaching of English-to-Chinese and Chinese-to-English translation. Teaching expertise in film studies, performing arts, or popular culture will also be assets for the position.
Requirements include: native or near-native fluency in both English and Mandarin Chinese; a PhD in Chinese Literature, Asian Studies, or a closely related field; exceptional organizational skills; evidence of excellent teaching ability in courses at the post-secondary level in North America on Chinese literature, Chinese-to-English and English-to-Chinese translation, and Chinese language; experience preparing teaching materials independently or collaboratively; and a strong track record of full participation in team work and program affairs. Individuals with the expertise to teach both pre-modern Chinese literature and modern Chinese literature, as well as translation theory, English-to-Chinese translation, and Chinese-to-English translation are particularly encouraged to apply. Experience teaching online courses or developing online course material for literature courses is an asset. We seek an exceptional teacher with a track record of employing innovative pedagogies, such as online teaching and distance learning, community-based learning, and curriculum/program design. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an excellent record of teaching and service.
The normal teaching load of a 12-Month Lecturer is eight 3-credit courses over the academic year. Courses will include a combination of lecture courses on Chinese literature taught in English, and advanced content-based courses on Chinese literature taught in Chinese. The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with the Chinese Language Program Director, and can also be assigned some program coordination duties around translation courses and content-based instruction curriculum development.
Please send the application dossier, including an application letter, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy, and lesson plan(s) and evidence of teaching effectiveness. Submission of teaching videos of a literature course in Chinese and/or a content course in English are strongly recommended; applicants are required to upload their teaching demos to Youtube as private videos and to send the links as part of their application submission. Applicants should also provide the names and contact information for three referees and arrange to have each of those referees send a confidential letter of recommendation. All application materials and reference letters should be submitted electronically to asia.jobsearch@ubc.ca.
The deadline for receipt of application materials and reference letters is June 2, 2017. The anticipated start date of employment is September 1, 2017.
This position is subject to final budgetary approval. UBC hires on the basis of merit and is strongly committed to equity and diversity within its community. We especially welcome applications from members of visible minority groups, women, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, persons of minority sexual orientations and gender identities, and others with the skills and knowledge to engage productively with diverse communities. We encourage all qualified persons to apply; Canadians and permanent residents of Canada will, however, be given priority. Applicants in this group are encouraged to self-identify.
