The Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) is one of Germany’s leading research universities. The University draws its strengths from both the diversity and the proximity of scientific and engineering disciplines on a single, coherent campus. This highly dynamic setting enables students and researchers to work across traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties.
The Ruhr-Universität Bochum – Faculty of History – invites applications for the following position to start on 1 October 2017
Professorship (tenure) for Transcultural Entanglements in the Ancient Mediterranean (Salary Scale W2)
The successful candidate will be expected to establish a sustainable research program and to be capable of carrying out and publishing original research. He or she will also be expected to be an effective teacher and mentor of both undergraduate and graduate students and to participate in academic self-governance.
Applicants should be able to cover the entire field of Ancient History on an international level. One field of expertise should be the history of transcultural entanglements between the societies of the Mediterranean in Antiquity, their characteristics and their embeddedness within the Mediterranean Region and beyond. Particular emphasis should be placed on transcultural entanglements between this ancient cultural space and its environment. A focus should also be placed on researching such phenomena of society which developed in Antiquity and were determining factors for the history of Europe and its cultures, such as the analysis of complex political systems and participatory violence communities.
A reputation for research both in a national and an international context is essential, as is the number of publications and a proven track record as an active contributor to collaborative research projects. Candidates should be both willing and able to work within an international and interdisciplinary context. The successful applicant will have demonstrated the ability to work with colleagues to develop new perspectives and projects for larger research groups and to bring in the necessary third party funding.
The future post-holder will be expected to be willing and able to collaborate with the Centre for Mediterranean Studies in cooperation with colleagues from fields such as archaeology and theology. A high commitment to teaching is also an essential.
Positive evaluation as a junior professor or equivalent academic achievement (e.g. habilitation) and evidence of special aptitude are just as much required as the willingness to participate in the self-governing bodies of the RUB and to generally get involved in university processes according to RUB’s mission statement.
The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is an equal opportunities employer.
