DUTIES: Academic research and teaching about contemporary China, preferably about the link between economics, society and culture.
TEACHING: The teaching responsibilities include a substantial part of the teaching activities in the field of contemporary China, including the following courses:
- China’s geography and society
- China’s national and international politics
- Capita selecta in Sinology
- Master seminar on modern China
- Organisational behaviour in China
Other teaching activities are:
- Supervision of bachelor’s papers and master’s theses, including the corresponding support activities (E.g. reading seminar)
- Participation in the development of the master program
- Participation in the doctoral seminars
Teaching is expected to meet the KU Leuven standards in terms of the academic level, programme, and orientation. It has to be in keeping with the educational vision of the KU Leuven. Commitment to quality of education as a whole is expected.
RESEARCH: The focus on research will be on contemporary China, preferably on the link between economics, society and culture (e.g. economic developments and social changes, cross-cultural management, organisational behaviour in China, etc.). This includes the supervision of master’s theses and Ph.D. students in these fields.
The candidate is expected to develop a research programme, to attract research projects, to promote national and international research collaborations, and to present outstanding scientific results at an international level.
SERVICE: The candidate is expected to actively participate in discussions about contemporary China within and beyond the university. He or she should be willing to contribute general service and to participate in administrative and management tasks.
REQUIREMENTS: The candidate is expected to have a Ph.D. degree in Sinology, or in an equivalent relevant domain with a sinological background. An excellent command of Mandarin and of English is required.
The candidate should be able to provide excellent teaching, so as to contribute to the quality of the research group at the level of education. The study programme attaches great importance to the interaction between the language courses and content courses and expects active collaboration with the language teachers for the elaboration of courses on contemporary China. Coaching skills for the guidance of students (e.g. during their stay abroad or internship) are an asset.
The candidate must be able to provide an excellent research record. The research quality should be reflected in international publications and participation in international conferences. International research experience is an asset.
A good knowledge of English is a prerequisite. The official administrative language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in meetings. Before teaching courses in Dutch, you will be given the opportunity to learn Dutch to the required standard.
The application should include a short research project (maximum 2 pages) and a vision statement about teaching (maximum 2 pages), in Dutch or in English.
Depending on the candidate’s record and qualifications, (s)he will be appointed to or tenured in one of the grades of the senior academic staff.
