Eastern Washington University seeks applications and nominations for a Dean for our College of Social Sciences.
We seek an experienced and dynamic leader who has a comprehensive understanding of a university education for the 21st century. The Dean is responsible for creating and supporting educational programs of the highest quality; serving as the chief spokesperson and College advocate; recruiting and maintaining an excellent and diverse faculty; promoting a comprehensive advisory board; managing budgets and resource allocation; and contributing to college advancement including fund raising and enhancing relationships with alumni, donors, partner institutions, and community and civic leaders. The selected candidate should be able to articulate the important contributions of fields in Social Sciences and professional SocialWork to both internal and external constituencies.
Additionally, the Dean is responsible for defining the College's strategic priorities, and will be proactively involved in continuing the growth of the College and its undergraduate and masters' programs which provide students with a strong liberal arts education in traditional and applied social sciences including an emphasis on multicultural, communicative, interdisciplinary and international perspectives on society and the world. The Dean serves as a member of the President's Cabinet and reports directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.
The College of Social Sciences provides quality undergraduate and graduate education that prepares our students to be successful professionals and to advance in their chosen careers; over 28% of Eastern's total enrollment of over 13,000 are CSS degree seeking students. The College offer a wide range of programs, three of them nationally accredited: Addiction Studies, Africana Studies, Aging Studies, American Indian Studies, Anthropology, Chicano Education, Children's Studies, Disability Studies, Geography, History, Interdisciplinary Studies, International Affairs, Military Science, Political Science, Psychology, Race & Culture Studies, Social Studies, Social Work, Sociology & Justice Studies, Women's & Gender Studies.
As the chief executive officer of the College, the Dean is responsible for creating and supporting educational programs of the highest quality; serving as the chief spokesperson and College advocate; recruiting and maintaining an excellent and diverse faculty; promoting a comprehensive advisory board; managing budgets and resource allocation; and contributing to college advancement including fund raising and enhancing relationships with alumni, donors, partner institutions, and community and civic leaders. Additionally, the Dean is responsible for defining the College's strategic priorities, and will be proactively involved in continuing the growth of the College in areas that are aligned with the needs of our region and state.
Eastern is particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates who can reinforce its commitment to intellectual and cultural diversity. We seek an educator who offers a sustained record of excellence and who embraces development of a student-centered learning community, backed by experience with fostering effective methods for teaching and learning. The selected candidate must have an understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with a regional comprehensive university, where nearly 50% of our first year students are the first in their families to attend college. The Dean should demonstrate a strong commitment to social justice, equity and inclusion.
Eastern seeks an experienced and innovative administrative leader to advance the College in education, research, and service to the community. Qualifications include a PhD from an accredited institution and in a discipline appropriate for the college; a record of teaching, scholarship and service commensurate with a tenured faculty appointment in one of the CSS departments; and a record of progressive academic administration and fiscal management at least at the level of a department chair, program director or associate dean. The Dean must possess demonstrated leadership skills to promote the betterment of the College and foster a collegial, collaborative, and student-centered environment.
The position requires a high standard of personal and professional ethics, and the ability to communicate and work effectively with all constituent groups internal and external to the institution, and in a collective bargaining and shared governance environment. Prior leadership roles in more than one of the following areas are expected: program development at the undergraduate and graduate levels, assessment (program and student learning), accreditation, fundraising, outreach, establishing a research program or center, and/or successfully promoting faculty and staff development initiatives.

Required Qualifications:
Eastern seeks a Dean with the following attributes and qualifications:
- Earned doctorate or terminal degree in a discipline appropriate for the college
- Demonstrated record of teaching, scholarship and service commensurate with a tenured faculty appointment at Eastern Washington University
- Demonstrated record of progressive academic administration and fiscal management equivalent to but not limited to that of a department chair, program director or associate dean
- Demonstrated record of a high standard of personal and professional ethics
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with all constituent groups, both inside and outside the university, including ability to work effectively in a collective bargaining and shared governance environment
- Demonstrated record of working for the betterment of the university and ability to work in a cooperative, collegial, collaborative, and student-centered environment
- Demonstrated leadership role in successfully promoting faculty, staff and program development initiatives
- Demonstrated ability to balance core programming responsibilities while working effectively with educational and community leaders to promote strong external relations, including ability to fulfill the role of chief spokesperson for the college to both internal and external constituencies
- Demonstrated record of fundraising and outreach
Additionally, candidates must offer demonstrated interest, ability and/or experience in promoting cultural competency and/or diversity, and a commitment to development of a diverse, student-centered learning community, excellence in scholarship, and applied community service.
