The Curatorial Fellowship Program at the Harvard Art Museums is designed to broaden the experience of scholars embarking on professional and academic careers in art history who are considering the museum profession.
Start date: September 1, 2017
This is a term position. Term duration: 2 years
Duties and Responsibilities:
- The Cunningham Curatorial Fellow conducts object-based research and scholarship on the Japanese Collections of the Harvard Art Museums, with a focus on the collection of Edo period paintings promised to the Harvard Art Museums by Robert S. and Betsy G. Feinberg. Under the supervision of the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Associate Curator of Asian Art, the Fellow works to improve cataloguing data, and researches and prepares interpretive exhibition and publication materials.
- The Curatorial Fellow assists with a broad range of curatorial activities in the field of East Asian Art, including preparation of interpretive materials, organization of gallery installations and exhibitions, cataloguing of the permanent collection in the museums’ database, and donor cultivation.
- Foregrounding the museum’s teaching and research mission, the Curatorial Fellow helps provide content expertise and support for the Art Museums’ Art Study Centers by supporting classes and individual appointments six hours a week, participates in a series of art handling workshops, and contributes to a rich offering of public and academic interpretive programs across various platforms. Fellow will be an active member of the Fellows’ cohort and contribute to a group project; this final project will likely take the form of an exhibition, gallery installation, symposium, or other.
- The Fellow may supervise students and temporary employees.
Basic Qualifications:
MA in Art History and/or East Asian Studies
Additional Qualifications:
- Expertise in early modern (Edo period) Japanese material culture
- PhD in Japanese Art History preferred
- High level of proficiency in both English and Japanese
- Curatorial or related experience
- Commitment to fostering the appreciation of works of art in a museum context
