Northern Illinois University anticipates an opening for the Director of the Center for Non-Governmental Organization Leadership and Development (NGOLD) with an expected start date of Fall 2017. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with tenure; the field of specialization is open. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of scholarly excellence in nonprofit and/or NGO studies. Academic administrative experience is preferred. Demonstrated ability to serve a diverse student population is strongly preferred.
NGOLD is an academic center that seeks to strengthen the nonprofit sector in northern Illinois, the United States and globally. The Center is deeply committed to interdisciplinary research, teaching, learning, and outreach. We have three joint-appointment faculty members drawn from the fields of Anthropology, Public Administration, and Sociology, and are poised to grow through additional joint appointments in the social sciences and humanities.
The Center is an active member of the Nonprofit Academic Centers Council and aligns its curriculum to the NACC Curriculum Guidelines. We provide major, minor, and certificate programs in Community Leadership and Civic Engagement to almost 200 undergraduate students, including engaged learning opportunities and internships in nonprofit and NGO sectors. In addition, we have an active community outreach program that provides service learning to nonprofit organizations in the Northern Illinois region and are developing data collection and evaluation capabilities to support program development in the nonprofit community.
The Director administers the everyday operations of the Center, as well as university and community outreach programs. Responsibilities include overseeing the growth of the degree programs, teaching and mentoring students, building an internal community of scholars and associated faculty interested in nonprofit and NGO studies at NIU, strengthening and extending the Center’s outreach mission, and contributing to NIU’s School of Public and Global Affairs. This will be a full-time, twelve-month tenured position at the associate or full professor level. The Director reports directly to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
REQUIRED SKILLS
Required qualifications include a PhD and ability to be tenured at one of NIU’s departments at the Associate or Full Professor rank, preferably from the humanities or social sciences, and demonstrated excellence in research on nonprofits and/or NGOs.
PREFERRED SKILLS
Preferred qualifications include academic administrative experience, the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities, strong leadership and strategic management skills, experience creating and implementing new programs and initiatives, experience with service and/or experiential learning, an active research profile, successful extramural fundraising, and demonstrated ability to serve a diverse student population.
