DESCRIPTION: Humboldt State University seeks a creative and inspiring Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences with the energy and experience to lead the college according to the University's strategic plan. The Dean is expected to have a genuine commitment to student success for all Humboldt State University students. Candidates should demonstrate an active and collaborative working style; a commitment to rigorous, innovative and effective teaching; and dedication to diverse cultural perspectives and multiple learning styles.
RANK, SALARY AND BENEFITS: The salary for this position lies within the Administrator IV range, and comes with an excellent benefits package. This is a CSU Management Personnel Plan (MPP) position. Under this plan, incumbents are subject to normal management reviews and serve at the pleasure of the University President. QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum qualifications include:
• An earned doctorate or comparable terminal degree in an arts, humanities, or social sciences discipline, and credentials appropriate for a tenured appointment at the rank of professor within the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences;
• At least three years of successful academic administrative experience at or above the program or department chair level, including strategic planning, managing complex budgets and personnel supervision
• Evidence of a strong commitment to excellent teaching and scholarship
• Ability to work effectively with and enhance a diverse campus community and strong commitment to support inclusive excellence through the University and community
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to resolve conflicts effectively, as well as familiarity with information technology innovations for higher education
• A history of an open, collaborative and collegial administrative style that demonstrates commitment to shared governance, consultation, and the ability to earn the trust of faculty, students, staff and administrators
• Commitment to the ideals of a liberal arts education and to academic freedom

• Success in strategic planning, budget responsibility, and management of faculty, staff and facilities
• Participation in efforts to recruit and retain a diverse population of students, and staff and faculty members
• Emphasis on social justice and environmental responsibility in the student development process

Responsibilities of the Dean:
• Personnel Management (e.g. attract and retain excellent and diverse faculty and staff; support faculty development and teaching excellence; review faculty and staff for retention and promotion)
• Academic and Curricular Planning (e.g. support curriculum and program development; participate in campus-wide planning, policy design and implementation; provide leadership in assessment)
• Resource Management (e.g. administer financial, staffing and physical resources, including those for instruction and research)
• Advancement (e.g. develop and promote community and university relations; facilitate external funding and grants)
• Enrollment Management (e.g. support student recruitment and retention; actively engage faculty and staff in identifying best practices; analyze and develop strategies to diversify campus)
General Information: The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences is one of three colleges at HSU and offers study in the humanities, visual and performing arts, and the social sciences. The College is home to 87 tenure line faculty members and 128 lecturers in 20 departments and programs, and is represented in collective bargaining by the California Faculty Association. Our community includes award-winning filmmakers, nationally and internationally exhibited visual artists, internationally recognized environmental creative practitioners and scholars, world class musicians, and active scholars and organizational leaders in their disciplines. The College is the campus hub for national and international field and study abroad programs. In addition, we prioritize service learning, faculty-student research projects and the integration of career development topics in the classroom. Our faculty and students lead annual social justice and diversity conferences on campus that complement classroom learning experiences. The College includes one of three American Indian Studies majors in the California State University and the first multicultural queer studies minor in the system. The College community works to sustain a learning environment that recognizes the value of diversity and encourages intellectual growth, personal expression, mutual respect, and social responsibility. Through the General Education program and elective courses, it contributes to a liberal arts base for all Humboldt State University students, as well as more than 20 undergraduates and four graduate programs.
