Faculty postion in Cultural Anthropology
Institution Type: | College / University |
Location: | Maine, United States |
Position: | Tenure Track Faculty |
College of the Atlantic seeks a full-time faculty member in Cultural Anthropology to teach a wide range of classes in anthropology. Courses are especially needed in ethnography, research design and methods. Candidates should be able demonstrate the ability to teach courses that incorporate historical and contemporary social theory and address the politics of difference, including race, sexuality, gender, and class, using interdisciplinary frameworks informed by feminist theory, postcolonial studies and queer theory. The area of geographic specialization is open, although we are particularly interested in a candidate with a teaching background and research expertise in Africa or Asia. The faculty seek a colleague who will help undergraduates understand and learn from the diversity of human cultures. The candidate must demonstrate an ability to simultaneously engage students at different levels and varying academic interests and motivations. The successful candidate will have a track record of teaching excellence, ethnographic fieldwork experience, and the ability to train students in ethnography among other research methods.
Ph.D. in Anthropology or related field required. The candidate should be broadly trained and have an interdisciplinary background or intellectual interests that require an understanding of multiple fields of study. The committee will seek evidence that the candidate has the ability to help students plan, conceptualize, and carry out independent research projects; challenge and inspire students to understand and use methodological and theoretical insights in sophisticated, creative, and practical ways. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the College’s ethical research review process. Position begins at the start of the 2017-2018 academic year.
We encourage applicants with interests across the sciences, arts, and humanities who are comfortable working collaboratively – with colleagues from different disciplinary traditions within the broad-based transdisciplinary curriculum of the College. Advising and mentoring students, directing senior projects, supervising independent studies, and contributing to college governance and service are part of the responsibilities of faculty membership.
COA is an interdisciplinary college of approximately 350 students and 35 faculty – where theory and research are tied to practice. Faculty are not organized in departments and all students design their own major in Human Ecology (BA, MPhil). The average class size is 13. Our educational approach integrates knowledge from all academic disciplines and seeks to understand and improve the relationships between humans and their built, natural, and social-cultural environments.
