The U.S. Naval War College, Newport, RI, invites applications and nominations for a one-year faculty appointment as the Ernest J. King Distinguished Visiting Professor of Maritime History in the Strategy and Policy Department.
The Naval War College (NWC) is a Professional Military Education (PME) institution serving the nation, the Department of Defense and the U.S. Navy. U.S. graduates earn a Master of Arts degree in National Security & Strategic Studies, accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The College has four main missions: Educate and Develop Leaders; Support Defining the Future Navy and Associated Roles and Missions, Support Combat Readiness, and Strengthen Global Maritime Partnerships. More information on the College can be found at www.usnwc.edu.
Strategy and Policy: The position falls in the Strategy and Policy (S&P) Department under the Dean of Academics. The strategy courses use strategic theory, the history of war (on land and at sea), and an examination of current-day conflicts to develop critical analytical skills for understanding the interrelationship of policy aims, strategy, and military operations. The interdisciplinary nature of the strategy courses requires that faculty members develop a breadth of knowledge well beyond their primary area of specialization. Additional details regarding the Naval War College and the Strategy and Policy Department curriculum can be obtained by visiting the Naval War College website at: http://www.usnwc.edu/Departments---Colleges/Strategy-and-Policy.aspx.
Responsibilities: Responsibilities include teaching one seminar in the College’s senior core course in strategy and one elective course in the candidate’s area of academic expertise, conducting research, engaging in other service of benefit to the College, and participating in outreach activities. The candidate may also assist with related programs at the College. Anticipated starting date is August 2017.
Qualifications: Candidates must have a significant amount of relevant academic or professional experience that would justify appointment at the rank of professor. Candidates must have an earned doctorate and extensive publications in the areas of maritime or naval history as well as evidence of outstanding teaching. The Department seeks candidates with significant scholarly attainment, extensive teaching experience, and particular expertise in the fields of maritime and naval history.
Salary Considerations: Salary is competitive and includes health insurance, paid vacation, and sick leave. Salary is commensurate with experience and credentials in accordance with the Department of the Navy Faculty Schedule.
