The Department of Asian Languages and Literatures in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota invites applications for a full-time, tenured or tenure-track position to begin fall semester 2017 (08/28/17). Review of applications will begin on October 17, 2016.
We seek expertise in the analysis of Chinese literature, media, drama, or other cultural texts, from any historical period, though preference is for scholars who work on the late imperial/early modern periods. Areas of interest could include, but are not limited to, literary studies, performance/drama studies, material cultural studies, gender/sexuality studies, religious studies, philosophy of science studies.
The faculty of Asian Languages and Literatures is committed to working in partnership with other departments and programs at the University in the humanities. The department is especially interested in candidates who are engaged in cross-disciplinary conversations and bring an innovative approach to the study of literature or other cultural texts and theory.
Appointment will be 100% time over the nine-month academic year. Appointment will be at the rank of tenured associate professor or tenure-track advanced assistant professor consistent with collegiate and University policy. Advanced ABDs will not be considered. Salary is competitive and will depend on the candidate’s qualifications and experience, consistent with school, college, and university policy. This position is eligible for the University of Minnesota’s standard benefits package available to benefits-eligible faculty and academic staff.
Faculty in the Department of Asian Languages and Literatures in the College of Liberal Arts are expected to maintain an active program of scholarly research; develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses; advise students; and contribute service appropriate for the rank of appointment to the department, college, University, and profession.

Qualifications:
A Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in China Studies, Comparative Literature, or related field is required. Native or near-native fluency in English and Chinese is also required. Candidates will be evaluated according to (a) overall quality of their academic preparation and scholarly work, (b) relevance of their scholarly research to the department’s academic priorities and fields of inquiry, (c) evidence of commitment to teaching and skills as an administrator, and (d) strength of recommendations.
The hire will be invited to serve as Academic Director of our Chinese Flagship program, a federally supported intensive Chinese language and culture training program for select undergraduates in diverse fields of study. This will involve a 25% reduction in teaching load in exchange for coordinating with the Associate Director to lead the culture-related course curriculum and programming and attend relevant meetings at the University and in Washington, D.C.
