The Rutgers Douglass Residential College (DRC) in New Jersey seeks an innovative, collaborative, academically-focused professional to serve as its next Senior Program Administrator (Director of the Douglass Course and Honors program) for Douglass Residential College (DRC). Founded in 1918, Douglass is the only women’s residential college in the nation located within a comprehensive public research university. The roughly 2,400 Douglass students benefit from both a small-college atmosphere dedicated to women’s success and leadership as well as access to the rich educational and research resources of Rutgers University – New Brunswick, New Jersey. Today, Douglass is the leading model for women’s education, incorporating a culture of women’s advancement within one of the finest universities in the country. This position will effectively direct the curriculum and programs for the Douglass course and the Douglass honors program. The Douglass course is affiliated with the well-known Women and Gender Studies Department at Rutgers University. The Honors Program at Douglass engages the honors students from all colleges at Rutgers into a transformative and intellectual program.
The person in this position will have a passion for women’s education in order to create educational innovations, to lead a team of instructors, and to teach as described below. This position will effectively direct the programs indicated in this description with academic responsibility for three core programs at DRC: (1) the mission Douglass course (titled: Knowledge and Power: Issues in Women’s Leadership) which is a 3-credit academic course affiliated with the Women and Gender Studies Department at Rutgers and enrolls over 500 students each year with an impact on all students at Douglass. (2) Teaching responsibility will also include a corresponding course for approximately 25 student mentors each year who support the Douglass course. This course is also a 3-credit academic course called the Voorhees Mentor course which is a corresponding peer mentor program/course for student leaders; and (3) direction and implementation of the Honors program at Douglass which provides an integrative academic, intellectual and co-curricular program for all honors students at Douglass, including a specialized program in the Honors College. This position reports to the Assistant Dean of Academic Program at Douglass Residential College, the women’s college at Rutgers University, New Brunswick.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Responsible for course content, syllabus, hiring and oversight of instructors, the course peer mentor program (Voorhees Mentors), selection guest speakers, and course logistics.
- Review and makes recommendations regarding curriculum and course projects so that the course content is relevant to issues related to the intersection of gender, race, faith, class, sexuality, and gender identity, integrating global perspectives, and issues relevant to STEM and women’s leadership.
- Logistics include hiring of course instructors, development and delivery of instructor professional development trainings, instructor evaluation, coordination with relevant Rutgers departments for enrollment of incoming students (first year and transfers), course evaluations, and related duties to ensure the success of the course.
• Requires collaboration between all courses/programs at DRC and with the Women and Gender Studies department to ensure a cohesive message.
• Develops the curriculum for the corresponding mentor/leadership course (Voorhees Mentors). The mentor course is a 3-credit academic course for undergraduate students who serve as student mentors/leaders in the core Douglass course.
• Teaches one section of the Douglass course in the fall semester each year and one section of the Voorhees Mentor course in the spring semester.
• Responsible for development and implementation of the summer reading program for incoming students.
• Plans the summer read program including selection and oversight of the student/faculty/staff that comprise the summer read committee, the selection of the book, engagement of students during the summer and new student orientation related to the selected book, and logistics for this program.
• Develops and oversees the Honors program at DRC which integrates all honors students from any of the Rutgers colleges into an engaging academic and co-curricular program at Douglass. This includes the Honors College at DRC. Through a partnership with the Honors College, DRC also offers a non-credit winter session course and year-round academic-focused lectures to high achieving students.
