As part of a new Faculty Diversity and Renewal grant meant to assist in recruiting and supporting a broadly diverse faculty who will contribute to the college's academic excellence, diversity of viewpoints and experiences, and relevance in a global society, the Department of History at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine seeks applications for a combined postdoc and tenure track faculty appointment in 19th- and early 20th-century U.S. history. The post-doctoral fellow will have a two course teaching load the first year followed by an automatic conversion to a tenure track, assistant professorship in year two. The latter carries an annual five course load.
To that end and in furtherance of academic excellence, Bates seeks applications from individuals from underrepresented groups in the professoriate, including African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, other Pacific Islanders, Asian Americans, first generation college students, individuals who have followed non-traditional pathways to college due to exceptional talent and motivation in the face of adversity, such as societal, economic or academic disadvantages, and individuals with a demonstrated commitment to applying and including diverse backgrounds and perspectives to learning, scholarship, creative work, service, and leadership in the academy.
The Department of History seeks candidates who are capable of teaching Civil War and Reconstruction and who are strongly committed to teaching at the undergraduate level and to research and publication. We are particularly interested in candidates who can contribute to interdisciplinary programs at Bates, including American Cultural Studies and/or African-American Studies. Full-time teaching responsibilities include a one-semester survey course of U.S. History, thematic courses and seminars, and senior thesis advising. The annual teaching load is five courses spread over two semesters and a short-term in the spring.

Preference will be given to candidates who will have completed by August 1, 2017 their Ph.D. in History, American Cultural Studies, or a related field. Review of applications will begin on October 15 and continue until the position is filled.
