1.
Your dissertation project is chosen from the broad field of mural painting in early modern Europe within the borders of the Holy Roman Empire (c. 1550 to 1800). The main focus should on laid on the interior and exterior decoration of profane buildings - as defined in module I and II of the Corpus-project: I. Courts, Palaces and Residences; II. Communal and private, aristocratic and civic buildings, and here preferably of the 16th and/or 17th centuries. Monographic studies on selected artists, workshops or monuments are welcomed, as well as overarching themes such as the transfer of knowledge and techniques, the exchange between artists and patrons, courts and citizens, or the relation between the iconography and the typology of spaces, the impact of ceremony or the cultural transfer with neighboring countries.
2.
Your dissertation project reflects on the varying approaches to lost or partly destroyed and reconstructed monuments of early modern mural painting in Germany with regard to its specific architectural context. It should focus on the important role of photographic documentation and its history and open the perspective towards the possibilities and discourse on real or virtual reconstructions and modelling, in close collaboration with the research team of the Corpus-project at the Deutsches Dokumentationszentrum für Kunstgeschichte – Bildarchiv Foto Marburg (Prof. Dr. Hubert Locher).
