The School of Languages and Cultures in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences offers the widest range of undergraduate and postgraduate language studies in Australia and is a centre for European, Latin American, Asian and Middle Eastern studies.
The Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies is seeking to appoint a scholar who will complement and enhance the department’s reputation in teaching and research. We are particularly looking for an expert in language teaching methodology, more specifically in the pedagogy of Spanish as a second language, applied linguistics and/or translation. Also of interest is an ability to teach and coordinate cultural units with a transnational focus on Spain.
In this exciting role you will have responsibility for designing and delivering core language units in written and spoken Spanish to undergraduates. You will also assist in language teaching and learning projects in the department, as well as contributing to our language program as a whole.
We are seeking a PhD qualified candidate with evidence of research achievements in a relevant area, together with experience in successfully developing and delivering undergraduate teaching at the university level. The post is intended to give an early career academic a unique opportunity to become a key player in the department’s current stage of curriculum revision and teaching and learning innovation.
In this role you will:
• maintain a research profile compatible with the department’s research
programs
• coordinate and contribute to teaching and assessment of first year student language units
• oversee the delivery and development of the language program as a whole (ie, first year to advanced) and design and maintain teaching material using e-learning platforms
• supervise honours and postgraduate research students
• contribute to core units in the Spanish and Latin American Studies majors
• develop one or more elective units for inclusion in the Spanish and Latin American Studies major where areas of focus would reflect your area of expertise, with specific emphasis on language pedagogy and on the culture of Spain, preferably with a transnational focus
• undertake general administration related to teaching responsibilities, including the coordination of core language modules and other administration as required
• participate in language outreach activities organised by the school
• carry out various administrative tasks as determined by the Head of Department and/or the Head of School
• regularly update your language teaching and pedagogical skills.
To be successful in this role you will have:
• a completed PhD in Spanish or Hispanic Studies
• native or near native fluency in Spanish and English
• experience in designing and teaching Spanish-language courses at all levels with demonstrated success in promoting student retention and achieving high levels of language competency
• a good record of peer-reviewed publications relative to opportunity
• a demonstrated ability, relative to opportunity, to develop and maintain an active research program including research grant applications
• evidence of your capacity to work flexibly and collaboratively in a team environment, to teach at different levels and assume roles in administration and planning in the department and school
• a commitment to innovation in teaching and learning
• the ability to create and nurture opportunities for collaboration across the school and the faculty.
Desirable for appointment is your:
• record of successful honours and research student supervision
• demonstrated administrative skills.
