JOB SUMMARY:
The United States Air Force’s Air War College (AWC) at Air University seeks candidates for a faculty position in the Department of Strategy. This position is an Administratively Determined (AD) civil service position. The AWC is the Air Force's Senior Professional Military Education institution. The academic program offers master’s degrees and senior-level professional military education to senior military officers and civilian officials from the United States and to senior officers from more than 40 nations.
Faculty members develop curriculum and teach and conduct research in the areas of grand strategy, air and space power strategy, and international security studies. This includes assisting students undertaking professional research and writing.
DUTIES:
Responsibilities include teaching graduate level seminars in the Foundations of Strategy core course as well as electives in area(s) of specialization, advising student research, research and publication, and service to the institution. The Foundations of Strategy is one of the Air War College’s primary core courses, introducing students to key strategic concepts, foundational readings and analytical frameworks that contribute to critically analyzing how strategies have been developed, implemented, and adjusted at the national and theater levels. The course uses historical and contemporary case studies to analyze and evaluate how strategy is developed, implemented and adjusted, thereby helping to develop in our students the knowledge and skills necessary to develop and shape military strategies which, in concert with other instruments of national power, achieve national security strategic objectives.
Additional duties may include teaching within the AWC’s Grand Strategy Seminar, participating in its Regional and Cultural Studies program, serving as a seminar academic advisor, and serving on various committees. The AWC provides a dynamic academic environment for teaching and research. The academic program offers master’s degrees and senior-level professional military education to senior military officers and civilian officials from the United States and to senior officers from more than 40 nations.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Academic teaching experience and/or extensive professional experience and a suitable publication record are required. A research focus on the employment of air or space power at the strategic level is highly desired. Teaching experience at the graduate level, and/or professional experience at a senior level within the DoD or other government agencies, is also highly desired.
A Ph.D. is required in Military or Diplomatic History, International Relations, Security Studies or a closely related field is required for appointment. ABDs who are confident that they will have completed their Ph.D. by the summer of 2016 will be considered. It is desired that candidates’ research field focus on strategy, air or space power at the strategic level, or international security policies related to the employment of air and space power broadly defined.
Academic rank for the position is open, but the focus is at the Assistant/Associate Professor level.
