The School of Culture and Society invites applications for an assistant professorship in philosophy. The assistant professorship is a three year full-time position, and subject to the availability of funding, an associate professorship in the same field will be announced in open competition at the end of the three-year term.
The position will commence on 1 August 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The position
The position is located at the Department of Philosophy and History of Ideas.
We are seeking an innovative and dedicated candidate with a focus on Aarhus University’s core activities in the areas of research, education, talent development, and knowledge exchange. The assistant professor will be expected to develop and strengthen the department’s profile in analytical theoretical philosophy. The successful applicant must be able to teach a range of core courses on the philosophy programme at both BA and MA level.
Research
The successful applicant will be expected to develop and to participate in research projects in one or more core areas of analytical theoretical philosophy, such as epistemology, metaphysics, philosophical logic, the philosophy of science, the philosophy of mathematics, the philosophy of mind, or the philosophy of language. The candidate must be able to demonstrate competences in using formal methodology in philosophical research. The School of Culture and Society places emphasis on research of a high international standard, including interdisciplinary collaboration, participation in collective research projects and the attraction of external research funding.
Education
The assistant professor will be expected to teach several modules or core courses in analytical theoretical philosophy at BA level, including critical thinking, formal logic, epistemology, the philosophy of science, the philosophy of mathematics, philosophical logic, and metaphysics, as well as advanced courses on our MA track ‘Epistemology, Metaphysics and Philosophy of Cognition’. The assistant professor will be expected to contribute substantially to the interdisciplinary profile of the philosophy programme at the Department of Philosophy and the History of Ideas.
Talent development
The assistant professor will be expected to contribute to talent development in the field of philosophy and related fields, and to develop his/her supervision skills at both BA and MA level.
Knowledge exchange
It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange as described in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, for instance in research cooperation with private companies, government consultancy, cooperation with civil society partners or public dissemination of knowledge. Applicants should document any prior experience within in the field of knowledge exchange.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD degree or equivalent qualifications in philosophy.
Applicants must also be able to document:
- An established research and publication record in one or more core areas of analytical theoretical philosophy (such as epistemology, metaphysics, philosophical logic, the philosophies of science, mind, of language, etc.).
- Competence in using formal methodology in philosophical research.
- Ability to teach modules in several of our core courses in analytical theoretical philosophy at BA level, including critical thinking, formal logic, epistemology, the philosophy of science, the philosophy of mathematics, philosophical logic, and metaphysics.
- Ability to teach and supervise at the MA level in theoretical analytical philosophy.
- Participation in national and international research networks.
- Experience of or interest in attracting external funding.
- Experience of or interest in interdisciplinary cooperation.
- Ability to teach in English at university level.
The candidate appointed to the post will be required to complete a course in university teaching devised especially for assistant professors.
Academic staff are expected to contribute to the department's social and academic environment. We emphasise the importance of good working relationships, both among colleagues and with our students.
