Institution Type: | Other |
Location: | Germany |
Position: | Fellow, Other Professional, Post-Doctoral Fellow, Research Professional, Visiting Scholar |
The Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg is known for its collection of international modern sculpture which is unique in Europe and its singular combination of outstanding museum architecture and sculpture park as well as sculpture sited in the urban landscape. In its temporary exhibitions the Lehmbruck Museum is committed both to doing justice to its internationally renowned collection and to promoting local and regional artists. This mixture has made the house an extraordinary place of communication between man and art and enables a journey through the history of modern sculpture from the greatest sculptors of the 20th century to the present day.
The Stiftung Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum – Zentrum Internationaler Skulptur is looking for an
international Fellow / junior scholar
whose primary field of expertise is audience development.
Start of employment: 1 April 2016. Job location is Duisburg.
This 18-month international Fellowship is supported by the “Fellowship International Museum” programme of the Federal Cultural Foundation. You will find information about the Fellowship programme at: http://www.kulturstiftung-des-bundes.de/cms/en/programme/fellowship_internationales_museum/
Job requirements: applicants must currently be based in a European or non-European country outside Germany, have international contacts in the museum world and certified C1 German language skills. Additional languages (English, Dutch and/or French) are desirable.
We are looking for a junior scholar from a relevant field of expertise in Cultural Studies or Art History and verifiable experience in audience development as well as practical experience of working in a museum. We expect applicants to be open for interdisciplinary teamwork and able to manage their own workload.
The aim of the Fellowship is the conceptual development and enhancement of better and more effective outreach measures for the museum. Specific responsibilities include the implementation of analyses of visitor demands and orientation as well as the development of own ideas and innovative instruments to improve audience outreach activities. The Fellow will be able to work with a renowned collection and well-established exhibition and communication structures. The focus of all activities will be the question: how does a museum reach its (new) audience today? This will be examined in an exemplary fashion on the occasion of the new presentation of the collection that will open in December 2016; measures will be developed, tested and subsequently validated according to their effectiveness.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Designing, implementing and monitoring measures to achieve a targeted audience enhancement. The focus here will be on the only rudimentarily developed target markets in the neighbouring countries of the Netherlands, Belgium and France. This will give the fellow an opportunity to build a broad cultural and tourist network.
- The result will be an audience orientation concept dedicated to optimising the development of (new) audience groups for the Lehmbruck Museum.
- The research results and insights will be made available to other museums via a symposium accompanied by a published documentation.
The post will be held on the basis of an 18-month project contract with an average of 39 working hours per week.
Participation in workshops, conferences, and events as well as building contacts with neighbouring museums and international partners of the museum during the Fellowship will be encouraged. The Fellow will be mentored by the director. The Federal Cultural Foundation is planning an extensive academic programme to support the Fellows.
