Location: | Denmark |
Position: | Assistant Professor, Associate Professor |
The Department of History at the School of Culture and Society invites applications for the position of assistant or associate professor in Danish/European medieval history 700-1500 AD.
If an assistant professor is appointed, this will be a three-year probationary position and subject to appropriate funding a subsequent associate professorship in the same subject area will be announced in open competition. If an associate professor is appointed, the position will be a permanent, full-time position.
The position is available from 1 August 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The position
For both the associate professorship and the assistant professorship we are looking for an enthusiastic, dedicated researcher and teacher who is willing and able to contribute to the department in the field of medieval history 700-1500 with particular emphasis on the history of Denmark and the Nordic countries.
Applicants must possess the qualifications and ambition needed to actively develop research topics within medieval history. It is important that the applicant can and will enter into collaboration with the other researchers at the Department of History as well as cross-disciplinary collaboration with colleagues within the broader framework of the School of Culture and Society and the Faculty of Arts in order to strengthen both research and teaching in medieval history.

The successful applicant will be expected to play an active role in the broader teaching framework in the subject of history, including teaching methodological and theoretical auxiliary courses. The successful applicant will be expected to teach Bachelor’s courses immediately, so applicants who can speak Danish or another Scandinavian language will be preferred.

Importance is attached to teaching and educational experience and qualifications. If an assistant professor is appointed, the person concerned must be prepared to attend Aarhus University’s special teacher-training course for assistant professors.
Talent development

The academic environment
The researchers and PhD students in history at Aarhus University concern themselves with history in many forms, primarily political history, cultural history and social history. Research especially comprises the history of Denmark and Europe, from Antiquity to the present day. Research projects are usually limited to specific historical periods and geographical regions, but characteristically the work traverses conventional chronological and geographical boundaries. Researchers participate in a variety of national and international research environments.
Both Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in history are offered. The Bachelor’s degree programme includes survey courses in Danish and world history, historical methodology, the uses of history, and courses in various historical topics. The Master’s degree programme is offered as three different tracks: a track for those aiming at upper-secondary school teaching, a cultural history track, and a track comprising global and international history. In addition, a number of elective subjects are offered at both Bachelor’s and Master’s degree levels. The department also has a large number of PhD students and shares a joint research training programme for PhD students with the Department of Archaeology.
