Assistant Professor of Liberal Arts, Art History
Institution Type: | College / University |
Location: | Minnesota, United States |
Position: | Assistant Professor |
Description: The Liberal Arts Department of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design seeks a full-time art historian in the field of Modern and Contemporary Art. We encourage applications from teaching scholars specializing in post-WWII art, preferably with expertise in a range of traditional and new media, able to teach foundation art history surveys, and with a secondary specialization or teaching experience in non-Western art history. The department also values teaching scholars able to draw connections across the liberal arts curriculum. Full-time faculty members are required to teach three courses each semester and participate in committee work and other departmental and college activities required of faculty. MCAD offers renewable, long-term contracts based on a clearly defined peer-review process.
Curriculum: MCAD’s Liberal Arts curriculum has a two-fold purpose: to provide intellectual and historical context for students’ studio educations, and to provide broader cultural, social and philosophical instruction relevant to all students seeking professional careers and responsible citizenship. One-third of the undergraduates’ course load is in Liberal Arts. The curriculum provides foundational instruction in writing and in art and design history. A broad variety of upper level courses fill out art, design, and other histories of the studio majors of the college, while other upper level courses serve to meet the college’s distribution requirements for studies in the humanities and related sciences. The department offers an Art History minor.
Candidate qualifications: Candidates must have a PhD in a related discipline, demonstrated teaching experience (minimum 3 years), and a record of publication, critical writing, curating, and/or scholarship.
The successful candidates will also have: an ability to inspire and motivate students; enthusiasm for innovative teaching methods such as experiential and interactive learning; an interest in collaboration and experimental projects with studio colleagues; good communication skills; publications in a relevant field of research, and participation in professional organizations; an imagination for the intersection of the humanities and the arts.
MCAD/Twin Cities: Founded in 1886, the Minneapolis College of Art and Design is a private, nonprofit teaching institution located in the Twin Cities.
