The Department of Religious Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Virginia invites applications for position in Chinese Religions at the rank of either tenure-track assistant professor or tenured associate professor. We seek candidates dedicated to our mission and passionate about teaching and research in a world-class institution. Candidates will be expected to teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and to provide service to the University, Department, and professional organizations. Candidates must be able to conduct original research on one or more of the religions of China, including Buddhism, Confucianism, Daoism, and other formations. Area of research specialization is open, though a specialization in Buddhism is of particular interest to the department. Deep familiarity with one or more areas of scholarship on Chinese religions, and the broader social, cultural, and intellectual contexts of the Asian region(s) being studied is required, as is a strong background in the history of interpretation and contemporary methods in religious studies, and other academic disciplines as relevant. Strong proficiency in Chinese is required, as well as other relevant Asian languages such as Japanese, Sanskrit, Pali, Tibetan, and so forth. Research and teaching interests in gender studies within the study of Chinese religions is preferred. Expertise and interests in digital humanities, interdisciplinary and inter-regional research and teaching, innovative pedagogies, and building collaborative projects are also looked upon positively.
Priority will be given to applications received by October 15, 2015 in selecting candidates for preliminary phone/video interviews. However the search will remain open until filled. The appointment start date will begin August 25, 2016. Applicants must be on track to receive a Ph.D. in the relevant field by May 2016 and must hold a PhD at the time of appointment.
