Amherst College’s Department of Art and the History of Art invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in contemporary art that will begin on July 1, 2016. We encourage applications from those whose research has a transnational emphasis. Amherst College has profoundly transformed its student body in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and nationality, among other areas. Today nearly one quarter of Amherst=s students consists of Pell Grant recipients; 43 percent of our students are domestic students of color. We seek candidates who are capable of demonstrating competence and sensitivity in working in a college in which students are broadly diverse with regard to gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion and/or candidates who have a record of teaching a diverse student population. Amherst College welcomes interdisciplinary teaching. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues in Film and Media Studies, Architectural Studies, and the Mead Museum of Art. Two courses per semester including a survey in the development of art and theory since 1960; supervision of senior honors projects; and advising. Candidates with the requirements for Ph.D. completed by July 1, 2016, will be considered. Amherst College is a private undergraduate liberal arts college for men and women, with 1,800 students and more than 200 faculty members. Located in western Massachusetts, Amherst participates with Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts in the Five College Consortium. It is close to MASS MoCA and two hours drive from the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston.
