The Jewish Museum Berlin has been among the outstanding institutions on the European museum
landscape since its opening in 2001. The museum’s exhibitions, permanent collection, events, and
educational work make it a lively place of reflection on Jewish history and culture in Germany. Its
Academy was founded in 2012 and is dedicated to social and political issues.
The Jewish Museum Berlin
– a foundation regulated by public law –
is looking to employ from 1 October 2015
for the design, academic research, and development of its new permanent exhibition on the history
and culture of Jews in Germany from its beginnings to the present day (opening in 2019)
an exhibition curator
with a primary focus on the 19th to the 20th centuries
salary group 13 (TVöD), full-time (39 hours per week), position limited until 31 March 2019

In the new permanent exhibition, we place particular importance on addressing the requirements of
our diverse audience, on contemporary forms of presentation, on emphasizing the interweavement of
Judaism with other cultures and religions, on the variety of the themes and objects presented, as well
as on strengthening the link to the present wherever appropriate. Moreover, knowledge about the
current state of research and interest in interdisciplinary questions and methods are important,
particularly with regard to cultural and sociohistorical perspectives. We place special emphasis on
knowledge of the visual evidence of the respective historical epochs.
Areas of responsibility
· Assistance in the overall dramaturgy of the new permanent exhibition
· Conception, research, and development of theme areas and exhibition ideas on the history and
culture of Jews from the late 19th until into the 20th century
· Research on objects, pictures, and documents in the Jewish Museum Berlin collections and
those of other museums and institutions with relevant holdings
· Selection of exhibits, development of media and interactive applications in close cooperation
with the exhibition team and exhibition designers
· Composition and editing of texts for visitor groups with varying expectations and
requirements
· Documentation of all objects, images, and exhibition elements in a database, comprehensive
documentation of all research results
· Support relating to both content and organization for all the museum departments,
companies, and cooperation partners involved in the project up until its completion
Requirements
· University degree in Jewish studies, religious studies, history, cultural studies, art history or
similar liberal arts discipline
· Very good knowledge of the history and culture of Jews in Germany from the late 19th until into
the 20th century with particular emphasis on the changes in the religious, economic, and social
life of the Jews in this period
· Considerable experience in communicating complex content to a wide audience
· Ability to formulate fluent, descriptive texts for readers with no prior knowledge
· Fluent written and spoken German and English language skills
· Enthusiasm for visual materials and three dimensional objects pertaining to the period in
question
· Openness for popular, entertaining, and innovative ways of presenting historicocultural
themes in a museum
· Organizational and communication skills, enthusiastic team member, resilient and flexible
· Experience in designing exhibitions, in exhibition or museum work, and in the handling of
original objects would be an advantage
· Knowledge of Hebrew would be an advantage
