Open Rank, Tenure Track Professor
Department of National Security Affairs
Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California
The Department of National Security Affairs (NSA) at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) seeks applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full professor in the history, politics, or security of the Middle East. We have a strong preference for candidates that specialize in the history and politics of Iran, sectarian conflicts in the Middle East, or Islamic history and cultures. Candidates should demonstrate a strong potential for teaching excellence and scholarly research. The successful candidate must also be prepared to teach an introductory Masters-level course on international relations, history, comparative politics, political economy or security studies in addition to graduate seminars on the Middle East.
NPS is an accredited graduate school the students of which are drawn from the armed forces and civilian agencies of the United States and other countries. The NSA department is multi-disciplinary, with curricula based on Political Science, History, and Economics. Tenure track professors typically teach a 2-2 load on a quarter system and maintain an active portfolio of academic research, publishing, and institutional service.
Minimum qualifications:
- Requires an earned doctoral degree from an accredited institution (ABDs see below)
- Evidence of teaching aptitude, especially at the graduate level
- Evidence of potential to advise student theses and dissertations
- Evidence of strong potential for scholarship leading to academic publications
A letter of application must contain a CV, cover letter that includes teaching and research interests, unofficial graduate transcripts, writing samples, and syllabi of relevant courses taught at the level of undergraduate courses or graduate seminars. Candidates should also submit three confidential letters of recommendation separately. ABDs are welcome to apply with the understanding that the award of a Ph.D. degree is a condition of employment. The search committee will begin reviewing applications 1 September 2015. The position will remain open until filled. Expected start date is in the fall of 2016 or earlier.
