A fulltime postdoctoral research associate is sought who will contribute to social science research into the decision-making of scientists as they conduct major environmental assessments. Preference will be given to candidates with a PhD related to science studies (history and philosophy of science, sociology, anthropology preferred), working knowledge of climate science and politics, and experience in ethnographic and interview methods. The preferred start date is February 1, 2016. The position is for one year with possibility of renewal pending satisfactory performance and available funding. Salary will depend on the number of years beyond the Ph.D, not to exceed three.
Researcher will be part of a research team that has been studying the history of scientific assessments, and will be expected to coordinate with project members at all four affiliated institutions (Princeton University with Michael Oppenheimer, Harvard University with Naomi Oreskes and Matthew Shindell, New York University with Dale Jamieson, and College of Saint Benedict/ Saint John’s University with Jessica O’Reilly). For this project, the postdoctoral researcher’s primary roles will be to 1) conduct literature research related to the study of knowledge production in major assessments, 2) conduct observations and interviews during ongoing assessments in tandem with other ethnographers, and 3) work with the research team on relevant analysis and publications.
More broadly, the researcher will be part of the Princeton Climate Futures Initiative, co-directed by Marc Fleurbaey, Melissa Lane, and Robert H. Socolow. The Climate Futures Initiative (CFI) is an interdisciplinary research program at Princeton University, administered by the Princeton Environmental Institute (PEI) and sponsored by PEI, the Princeton Institute for International Regional Studies (PIIRS) and the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment (ACEE). S/he will be expected to play a leading role in participating in and organizing initiative activities, working with the initiative directors and other members of its steering committee.
