Description
The University of California, Berkeley, Institute of European Studies (IES) invites applications for the position of Associate Director (Academic Coordinator II), to begin September, 2015. The appointment is for one year, renewable annually.
The Associate Director, working collaboratively with the Director and the Executive Committee, is responsible for the intellectual growth of the Institute's programs. An organized research unit under the Vice Chancellor for Research, IES is composed of the EU Center in conjunction with the Institute of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies; the Center for German and European Studies; the Center for British Studies; the programs for French Studies, Portuguese Studies, Spanish Studies; and the Title VI National Research Center. Two additional programs, focusing on Nordic Studies and BENELUX Studies, are currently under development.
IES seeks to enrich America's understanding of Europe — its people, developments and challenges — through the generation and dissemination of distinguished scholarship. As the University's focal point for the study of Europe, IES brings disciplines together to create new cross-disciplinary understandings of European issues and issues related to Europe and its constituent nations. The Institute's goals are threefold:
1) To stimulate, initiate, facilitate, and finance research and education in European studies at Berkeley and throughout the state;
2) To disseminate research findings to the broader community of scholars, citizens and younger students; and
3) To provide a community for students and faculty who share a European focus to their work.
The Associate Director initiates, coordinates, and manages the research programs, convener groups, and fellowship competitions. The Associate Director works with IES-affiliated faculty and students (both graduates and undergraduates), produces and edits publications and coordinates the activities of all the above mentioned research centers and programs. The Associate Director advises and supports the Director in setting program priorities, in general policy and decision making, and in liaison with other units on and off campus. The Associate Director is also strongly involved with fundraising and grant preparation.
A Ph.D., or equivalent, in a field relevant to European studies is required by the start date. At the time of application, the basic minimum qualification is the completion of all degree requirements except the dissertation.
Additional Qualifications required by start date:
• Excellent (preferably native-level) written and oral communication skills in English
• Near native-level written and oral communication skills in at least one other major European language, with a strong preference for French or German
• Administrative and fundraising experience, preferably in an educational setting
• Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, visiting scholars, community groups, and foundation program officers
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with grant writing and managing data for grants
The position will be full time with a salary range of $63,012 - $75,864, commensurate with experience and qualifications, and carries benefits.
The position will be open until filled. The first review date is July 20, 2015; please apply by this date to receive full consideration. Applicants should submit a cover letter, a current CV, a writing sample (preferably a grant proposal or report), and two letters of reference online at: http://apptrkr.com/628435: Please contact Gia White at mailto:gia@berkeley.edu with any questions.
