The History Department of the University of Texas at Austin invites applications for the position of Associate Professor/full Professor and Chief Historian of the Texas State Historical Association (TSHA). The Chief Historian is responsible for the content of all scholarly work of the TSHA, including editing the Southwestern Historical Quarterly, directing book publishing by the TSHA Press, serving as liaison between the TSHA and the Annual Meeting Program Committee, and overseeing continual expansion and upgrading of The Handbook of Texas Online content.
Applicants should have an outstanding record of research and publications in the field of Texas history and an appreciation for the state’s rich diversity. We are particularly interested in candidates who have expertise in digital scholarship and communication. The successful candidate will be expected to carry out the duties of the TSHA Chief Historian, engage in high quality research/scholarly activities, demonstrate effective classroom teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels, direct graduate research, and exhibit a commitment to service to the department, college, and university. Applicants should have experience teaching and researching at the rank of either associate or full professor with documented evidence of teaching excellence. The successful candidate will be fully housed as a tenured faculty member in the History Department, will receive a reduced teaching load while serving as Chief Historian, and programmatic and research endowment support, as either holder or fellow depending on rank.
A PhD degree in History or related field is required. Applicants may currently hold the rank of either associate or full professor. Salary for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
