THE HONG KONG UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Division of Humanities
Faculty Positions in History
The Division of Humanities invites applications for one or more substantiation-track faculty positions in history at Assistant Professor rank tenable in Fall 2016. Appointees will teach undergraduate courses in humanities for general education and the undergraduate major program in Global China Studies offered by the School of Humanities and Social Science. Where required, the successful candidates will also be involved in postgraduate teaching in the field of the faculty's specialty. Applicants should have a PhD degree from a reputable university and demonstrated academic record on, or potential in, research and publication with international impact. A track record of successful competitive grant applications and/or excellent record on teaching at college level will be advantageous. The area of specialty within the broadly-defined field of history is open, but those candidates with strength in history of science and technology, economic history, comparative history, social and cultural history, intellectual history, institutional history, military history, historical theories, maritime history, or the application of digital technology in history like HGIS are particularly welcome to apply. While China is the focus area for our Global China studies program, our consideration will not be confined to China experts. For instance, those with expertise in Northeast and Southeast Asia, South and Western Asia, Africa, and the Latin America, preferably with a comparative or global perspective, may also be considered. Interdisciplinary and interregional research orientation, proven potential to develop teaching and research in the broad directions of digital humanities and MOOCs, or the ability to connect to the strength of science and technology fields of the University would be welcome. We may consider very outstanding candidates for appointment at Associate Professor or Professor ranks. They must also show evidence of potential leadership and managerial skills in academic administration. While fluency in English is expected for all, candidates specializing in China-related areas must have native-speaker proficiency in Chinese language. Review of applications will start on 20 August 2015, and will continue until the positions are filled.
Salary is highly competitive. Fringe benefits include medical/dental benefits and annual leave. Housing will also be provided where applicable. With the exception of strong senior candidates who may be offered appointment on substantive terms, initial appointment will normally be made on a three-year contract, renewable subject to mutual agreement. A gratuity will be payable upon successful completion of contract. Substantiation review normally takes place before completion of the second three-year contract.
