The School of Culture and Society invites applications for an associate professorship in the study of religion. The associate professorship is a permanent position which begins on 01.01.2016 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The position
We are seeking an innovative and dedicated candidate who will contribute to Aarhus University’s core activities in the areas of research, education, talent development and knowledge exchange. The position focuses on the interdisciplinary psychology of religion and the new experimental science of religion. The future associate professor is expected to help further the integration of the interdisciplinary psychology of religion within the study of religion at the Department of the Study of Religion through teaching and research at the highest international level. She or he will be situated within the department’s Religion, Cognition and Culture Research Unit.
Research
The School of Culture and Society emphasises high-quality research and attaches great importance to interdisciplinary collaboration, participation in collective research projects, and the ability to attract external research funding.
We are looking for a candidate with a strong profile and track record in the study of religion, as well as experimental expertise in psychology, neurocognition and the cognitive science of religion.
We are particularly interested in a candidate whose training and research integrates the above-mentioned fields. The associate professor will be expected to develop collaborative research initiatives locally and internationally.
Education
The associate professor will be expected to teach and supervise students at all levels (BA, MA and PhD) and contribute to the development and application of innovative teaching methods. The position involves teaching duties as well as responsibility for the development of interdisciplinary courses that encompass the above-mentioned fields of study and the general psychology of religion. This also includes (individual and team) teaching current topics in her/his field of expertise.
Talent development
The associate professor is expected to contribute to talent development within the fields of the study of religion, interdisciplinary psychology and the cognitive science of religion. She or he will be expected to supervise PhD students as well as teaching and developing PhD courses.
Knowledge exchange
It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange as mentioned in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, for instance in research cooperation with private companies, government consultancy, cooperation with civil society actors or the public dissemination of knowledge. Applicants should document their interest in (and preferably their experience of) knowledge exchange with society in relation to religion, cognition and culture.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in the comparative study of religion or other equivalent field in the social sciences or humanities, as well as teaching qualifications equivalent to those acquired in an assistant professorship. Applicants must also be able to document:
- An internationally oriented research profile.
- A strong, relevant international publication profile.
- Experience in designing and effectuating experiments.
- Experience of participation in collective research projects.
- Teaching experience in areas of relevance to the study of religion as well as mastery of academic English in the classroom.
- Participation in national and international networks.
- Experience of interdisciplinary cooperation.
- Experience of attracting external research funding.
- Experience of supervising student projects and an interest in researcher talent development.
Applicants are expected to contribute to the academic environment of the school and the department. We emphasise the importance of good working relationships, both with colleagues and students.

If the successful applicant is not fluent in Danish, she or he will be expected to learn Danish within a period of approximately two years.

The Department of the Study of Religion at Aarhus University
The study of religion at Aarhus University is concerned with religion in the most comprehensive sense, covering all major world religions and other religions and phenomena within the history of religions, both past and present. This is reflected in the research competencies of the academic staff, which comprise not only a broad spectrum of empirical skills but also a wide range of theoretical and methodological approaches from fields which include history, philology, literature, philosophy, anthropology, sociology, psychology, and comparative religion.
Aarhus University has one of the largest research environments in the world in this field. It has particularly strong research competencies in religions of Antiquity, Old Norse religion, contemporary religions, the cognitive science of religion and the experimental science of religion.
